While Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year is an occasion of joyous celebrations, it is also deeply characterized by religious customs. It’s a solemn day of Judgment and Reckoning. Its also a joyous occasion for which people prepare by bathing, cutting out hair and wearing good clothing. Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the High Holidays. It ushers in the ten days of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Various customs are associated with Rosh Hashanah. The list of religious norms to be maintained on this occasion is long. The blowing of Shofar, the Seder, the Taschlich, Tzedakha, Kiddush, the customary food that includes – the Challah, Apple dipped in Honey, Pomegranate, Tamri, Tzimmes to name a few. However, there are also certain prohibitions to be followed during this auspicious festival. While the stricture of theses customs and prohibitions has declined over the years, many people still follow these with solemn dedication.
Six prohibitions during Rosh Hashanah -
1) No work – Rosh Hashanah is meant to be a day solely dedicated for praying in the synagogue, asking for redemption of one’s sin and enjoying oneself with one’s family. Hence it is a day of no work. ‘Melacha’, which means actions that serve any positive purpose, are prohibited on Rosh Hashanah with the exception of food preparation, carrying and transferring or increasing of fire. The Jews treat this day as an important holiday and do not engage in jobs, business or other productive work on this day.
2) No sleep in the afternoon – It is customary not to take a nap on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah. While some hold this to be applicable only for the first day of Rosh Hashanah ( it being a two day occasion ), others consider this custom to hold good for both days of Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is viewed as a representation of the coming year. If one engages in sleep on this day, he or she will likewise have a sleepy year. Rosh Hashanah is not a day to be idle. It’s meant to be a day of contemplation, learning and praying. It is believed that if one is not prepared to do these on the day of Rosh Hashanah and spends his time sleeping, his good fortune will not be prepared to show its face during the upcoming year. This is mentioned in the Jerusalem Talmud which says -
“If one sleeps at the year’s beginning (Rosh Hashanah), his good fortune likewise sleeps.”
3) No nuts – Its is customary to avoid eating nuts during Rosh Hashanah because of two reasons – (i) Nuts produce an overabundance of saliva or phlegm and can make it difficult to recite the prayers of the day. (ii) Nuts have the same numerical equivalent in Hebrew as that of sin.
4) No colored dresses – While there is no absolute stricture regarding colored dresses, it is customary to wear white garments during Rosh Hashanah. The color white symbolizes purity and renewal which reflects the true essence of Rosh Hashanh. The color white on Rosh Hashanah also symbolizes the ideal of nearness to G-d, and it enhances the religious solemnities of the day. During the synagogue services, the Rabbi and the Cantor wear white Kittels (kind of robes). It is reminiscent of the words read on Rosh Hashanah: “Come, now, let us reason together, says G-d. If your sins are like scarlet they will become as white as snow; if they have become red as crimson, they will become white as wool” (Yeshayahu 1:18).
5) No anger – One should be careful to avoid anger during Rosh Hashanah. It is believed that G-d judges and treats his followers in the same way as they judge and treat others. If one is angry with others, G-d similarly will be angry with him.
6) No smoking – One should refrain from smoking on this auspicious day. It’s the beginning of a New year when one should remain free from all negative addictions and engage in prayers and contemplation.

it was about a family going to their daughters boyfriends mom’s house for Christmas and for some reason the dad thought that they should take a shortcut route..and then they get into some haunted road…while driving the dad saw a lady in a white dress in the woods so he slams the brakes and reverses the JEEP(car) to look for her. they later find her they try to ask her questions but she won’t talk …any ways the major part is she kills the boyfreind when family is in an odd shed next to the road, they keep on driving but seem to pass the same signs over and over again then families son,then the mother, then father….. but the daughter does not …she somehow ends up in the hospital…………………………….. it’s a scary movie .sorry did’nt mean to bore you….BUT THANKS for your answers…..first one to get the name gets
