Why do plastic trees and little lights?
represent Chirst? I have a coworker who is freaking out over the fact that everything in stores say “holiday” instead of Christmas (decorations). I’m just curious if it bothers anyone else and why? What do plastic trees and colored lights have to do with anything holy?
Decorating a tree and putting lights on it is a pagan tradition, so if your co-worker was really truly celebrated “Christmas”, the name of decorations shouldn’t really matter to her.
The lights (candles) are used to symbolize the birth of the Sun and the lengthening of days. Evergreen type trees were used because early pagans noticed that in the winter when everything else died, these trees were still alive and green so they thought that the trees had some kind of special power against death. They acted as a symbol of life in the winter when everything else is bleak and lifeless.
