Relative refuses to speak to us but attends all family events?

I just heard that our mute brother in law will be coming along for our week long trip to Florida the week of Christmas. He is one odd bird. He just does not talk. I know he can talk because he will order his food and say a few things to his son, but he does not ever talk to any of the family members. I have only seen him talk to his wife one time in 10 years.

this is an interesting situation for sure

but ultimately it’s his choice if he doesn’t want to speak, or if he is unable to speak.

but he is making the effort to tbe there. he’s coming to all the family events. that should mean something.
if it really makes you that uncomfortable, i would just avoid him but please be polite as it looks like he is trying.

maybe you could ask your aunt for some stragegies
or if you are not comfortable with that pick some activities that people can talk but are not required to talk

* some board games
