It is of this Ukranian band wishing you a merry Christmas in Russian (as far as I can gather – I speak Russian very badly). But what I was actually wondering was can you actually tell from their accents that they are from the Ukraine? Like, do different regions of Russia/Eastern European countries also have very different accents when they speak in Russian, and Russian speakers would be able to tell the difference?
First, they aren’t wishing anyone a merry Christmas in the video, they’re discussing a song they say they like and how they are going to sing it right here and now.
Then, different regions of Russia and its Slavic neighbours do have different accents, but mostly they are so slight that it requires certain talent and dedication to learn to recognize them.
Finally, some very weak Ukrainian accent does indeed show itself sometimes (in the guy on the left especially), but I guess it’s because they’re not quite sober. It’s hard to notice if you listen to their words and not their accents, because such level of such accent is pretty common.
