The town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England lies on the Atlantic coast of this northwestern county. It enjoys a population of nearly 60,000 people, and is more familiarly known as just “Barrow.” In addition to being a seaport, it is also an industrial town. It has a proud history of strong support of the WWII British war effort, when the shipyards of Barrow played an integral role in the eventual Allied victory.

Until the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the town mainly existed as a village dedicated to its fishing activities up through the early years of the 19th century. Barrow-in-Furness benefited at that time from the arrival of the Furness Railway, which eased the shipment of ores into the region. From there, these metals were smelted and turned into steel, which was then shipped back out or used in the town’s shipyards.

The town’s history goes back to the Middle Ages and the dominance of a local religious abbey in the area. This structure, erected around 1123, allowed the town to stabilize and grow. By 1190, the town was called “Barrai,” and then “Oldebarrey” at some point in the 16th century. With the modernization of English over the intervening years, it’s easy to see how the name evolved into Barrow.

Today, the town is recreating itself yet again. There has been extensive updating of its port area, with attendant commercial activities being drawn to this part of the town. There are numerous hotels, shops and restaurants, along with a renovated and improved 400 berth marina.

Barrow-in-Furness also has its own pro football (soccer) team, which plays in one of the English leagues. Additionally, there are also rugby and cricket sports organizations. This makes Barrow somewhat of a sports-mad town. Today’s Barrow continues to pay homage to its past while living fully in its present and looking eagerly towards its future.

The shire county of Cumbria, in which Barrow-in-Furness resides, is located in the northwestern part of the country. It currently has a population of around 425,000 people. Among ceremonial counties, it is also the country’s third-largest. With a picturesque Irish Sea coastline, it’s hard not to be impressed by its natural beauty.
