Avid rock music fans have for decades been captivated by such rock variations like hardcore punk which is characterized by a strong back beat laced with electric guitars, which can be either hollow, acoustic or solid electric.

Rock music in the 80s and 90s had pretty much arrived at its peak until a new variation began to take shape and that is, emo music, whose unique identifier is in its being less chaotic and more melodic coupled with a rhythmic beat. It has also been termed “emotionally-charged punk rock” music.

Emo music is a type of rock music but with a solid difference. Originating in the Washington DC area in the 1990s, emo (which stands for emotional hardcore) music has gained notoriety with the emergence of such bands as One Last Wish, Embrace and Fire Party. Emo music has been compared to indie rock.

In the mid-90s, a Seattle-based band inspired by Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, attempted to reinvent the melodic guitar orchestrations and added a pinch of harmonic melodies to it. Word began to travel of the catchy new rock vibes and emocore and indie emo sounds were born. In Austin Texas, computer geeks also caught on quickly and the Internet was used to pass the word around in the punk-rock Internet forums.

Originally, the sound took some time to catch because it was unfamiliar, being widely associated with non-traditional instrumental arrangements (no verse, and then a chorus), but with time, such bands such as Promise Ring, Weezer, and Jimmy Eat World slowly worked the emo sound into MTV airplay and the rest was history!

Emo music also spawned a subculture which is inherently punk-rock. Teens attending emo concerts and shouting “screamo” spotted tight pants, dyed hair and ragged jeans. This style has been widely associated with the 50s-era appearances at Frank Sinatra concerts but it has been taken a step further recently. Emo adherents spot gothic looks such as faces painted chalk white and hair and nails dyed black. This “zombie” appearance, complete with Celtic crosses and jewelry has not gone without its critics.

Conservatives parents and politicians have called the emo subculture, which is inspired by emo music, a cult especially when high schools and colleges associate binge drinking with the emo culture. Top rock star Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide has been widely linked to the emo music culture.

But those that love emo music continue to contend that this is a harmless subculture of music which should be left to flourish and evolve to its peak, giving teens and others a sense of identity and creativity. Emo poetry has also emerged and gives another dimension to emo music. The website house of emo offers emo information in a blog-like fashion and no doubt the emo culture is here to stay.
