Kids can easily get caught up comparing what they have to what their friends have or what they see advertised on TV. They often care more about themselves and their “stuff” than thinking of others or even being aware of others’ needs. As a parent, you can find ways to broaden your children’s thinking. Help them want to make a difference in the world by playing their part. When they learn the importance of helping others, kids become well rounded, emotionally aware, and more productive leaders.

One of the best lessons I learned as a child was how good it feels to generously give from the heart. I was in fifth grade when my school sponsored a clothing drive. With a teacher, I helped deliver the collected clothes to needy families. One family in particular seemed to have less than all the others. When I told my parents about them, they decided our family could help. It was Christmas time, so we loaded up our station wagon with wrapped presents, food, and even a Christmas tree. I saw how much these gifts meant to the family who received them, and I experienced the satisfaction of knowing I had helped put a little more happiness into the world. I found that it truly is better to give than to receive.

You can share some simple activities with your own kids that will help them focus on contributing to and caring about the wellbeing of others. Here are some ideas for getting the whole family into the charitable spirit:

When the kids get bored this summer, have them organize a yard sale and sell their outgrown clothing and unused items. Or they can collect aluminum cans or sell hand made jewelry and other items. Then they can contribute a portion of the money collected to a charity of their choice.

When it’s too hot to play outside, clean out the toy box and donate unwanted toys to Goodwill, or visit a nursing home and take drawings to decorate the residents’ rooms.Toddlers can provide hugs and older children can put on skits, read, or just visit. Bringing the family dog along can make it even more fun.

On rainy days when playing outside isn’t possible, have the kids go through the cupboards choosing items to donate to a food pantry. Then hop in the car and deliver them together. Your family might also enjoy organizing a food drive in the neighborhood. Even small children can help collect cans, boxes, and bags.

If it’s time for a hair cut, talk to your kids about contributing to Locks of Love, giving their hair to make wigs for children with cancer.

Volunteer opportunities you can commit to on a regular basis might include delivering meals on wheels, watering and weeding a garden for an aging neighbor, walking and brushing animals at your local shelter, clearing tables at a food kitchen, baking for and visiting shut ins, and working at community or church benefits.

A fun and easy activity to do together is mailing cards and drawings to sick or injured children. From tiny tots to wheelchair bound grandmas, every member of the family can participate. For a list of children who could use some cheer, visit the Hugs and Hope Foundation’s web site at www.hugsandhope.org

These suggestions are just the beginning. With the help of your kids, you can add plenty of fun activities to this list. Working on these projects together will make idle time and boredom a thing of the past. You’ll be teaching your kids compassion, helping them to be responsible young people, and having a fun summer all at the same time!

Marsha Jordan, a disabled grandmother and undiscovered shower singer, created The HUGS and HOPE Foundation for Critically Ill Children. Her humorous, inspirational book, Hugs, Hope, and Peanut Butter is illustrated by sick kids; and profits from the book’ sale benefit children around the country. The book earned Parent to ParentÂ’s 2006 “Best of the Best” award, honorable mention in The WorldÂ’s Funniest Humor Contest, and an endorsement from Phyllis Diller. http://www.hugsandhope.org/pb.htm

Any holiday plays/skits?

I’m trying to find some holiday plays/skits for my girl scout troop and I to perform in front of my sister’s class, kindergartners and first graders. If anybody has any short (at most 20 minutes) skits/plays that are age-appropriate and about the holidays (no Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, etc.), it would be great if you could leave it in the answers. Thanks!

We had done a skit with the boy scouts on it is better to give than to receive. It does not matter what religion you are to do this skit as it is the time of gift giving. Every child is so proud to buy something for another person, but there is hardly any emphasis put on this when the parent just picks the gift out. If you have enough in your dues money you could give each child 50 cents to buy a gift for another for the skit. They may buy something out of a gumball machine, sticker machine, tatoo machine, jewerly machine, or a candy bar, etc. but nobody should tell them what to buy, or tell them they are not getting a bargain for their 50 cents (sometimes this lesson is harder for the parents). The kids put their gift in a brown paper bag and taped it shut. All the gifts were under a tree that we decorated with paper ornaments that had one nice thing we could do for someone (no money involved). One by one the simulated a gift giving, and the kids really enjoyed watching the other person open their brown paper bag rather than worrying about what they were getting. They were more concerned with who was going to open the bag with what they bought rather than what was in the one they had gotten or were going to get (we had our mc of the skit draw names out of a hat so everyone opened gifts randomly). We of course had some stories and discussions ahead of time about greed, giving, manners, and the rules to buying (50 cents only including tax). But the skit was based soley on the kids going to the store with their parents (another kid or kids in the skit) telling them what to buy, or how to get the most for their 50 cents, or how the parents just let them get what they felt was the perfect gift. It was a good lesson for the kids and more so the parents, as we all get overwhelmed this time of year, and it was so nice to see the children enjoy simple concepts, and a great lesson. You will see some parents cringing in their seats, as they know which side they fell on with this task, but none the less the kids learned about giving and receiving. Then at the end we had a parent of each child pick an ornament off the tree and read it. It did not have to be their childs ornament.
