Christmas in NYC? Advice Needed…?
My husband and I will be visiting my mother in upstate New York in December. We plan to drive from Buffalo to New York City for two full days. We have never been, and we can’t wait to be tourists!
What is going on in New York during the holidays that a tourist just can’t miss? I know there is a huge tree and a skating rink somewhere, I think? What else is a must see?
I have no idea what to plan for because the city is so big. We for sure want to see a few major landmarks such as Times Square, Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty, central park, and the grounds of the World Trade Center. Is all that possible in two days?

I suggest that you take advantage of all the Christmas Decorations and displays. More specifically, 5th Avenue between 42nd and 59th street is a winter wonderland during December. All of the windows of the shops have these ornate Christmas displays. Stop by Macy’s in Herald Square (34 street/6th Avenue). Even if you’re not going to buy anything it’s worth stopping by just to look at the decorations. At Grand Central Terminal (42nd Street/Lexington Avenue) they have a holiday-themed kaleidoscope show on the ceiling of the terminal. At the Citigroup building (Lexington Avenue/51st Street) there is a free model train exhibit. Even if you’re not into model trains it’s fun to look at it. I also suggest stopping by FAO Schwartz (5th Avenue/59 street). It is NYC’s most popular toy store. It gets crowded in the holiday season but it’s still worth it to stop by. Rockefeller Center (5th Avenue/50th Street) has both the Christmas tree and the skating rink. While you’re in the area go to Radio City and watch the world famous Rockettes. Make sure to get a subway map so you don’t get lost.
