I am making my mother-in-law a tote bag for christmas. What should I make for my father-in-law?

Would be easier if we knew his interests, etc, but most all males like even simple lap quilts –just make it in neutral colors and geometrics if he’s a more traditional male, and about the length from middle of his chest to well over and past his feet and at least 36″ wide.

For the “top,” you could just make a “bricks” or “rail fence” pattern, or just use or a bunch of squares in a grid (random placement of squares or in a pattern) or just all long strips–those are all pretty easy to do.
Or you could simply buy a wide length of fabric you think he’d like and use that for the top rather than “piecing” a top.
After that the simplest way to put the top, batting, and backing together is using the “inside out” method, followed by “tying” the layers
