Is it a waste of time for me to apply for a seasonal job?

I am currently in college a few states away from my hometown, but I would like to keep myself busy when I arrive back home. My classes don’t end until the week before Christmas, so I will be back in town the Friday before the holiday. Do you think it’s a waste of time for me to apply for seasonal jobs, since I won’t be able to start working until the week before the holidays? I am willing to work full-time seasonal, or part-time seasonal, on weekends, and holidays at any times. I just won’t be able to start working until later than most seasonal people. Do you think I will be overlooked by potential employers because of that? Any advice, tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
