Christmas memories are so precious – and scrapbooking those memories is a perfect way to gear up for the holidays. You may find you have more time for this if you plan it for November or even earlier in the year – if you don’t have time before the holidays, January is a perfect time for indoor craft projects. Gather all your holiday photos from the previous year, or several years, and gather all your kids if they are old enough to help.

Theme pages could show how your child has grown from year to year with Santa’s lap photos from several years or their holiday portraits from each year. Other cute themes might be holiday cooking, sledding, playing with cousins, or decorating the Christmas tree.

Family changes are also fun to document. Showing several generations of pictures with a similar theme, or pictures of Grandma with your child as a baby, toddler, school age child and older would also be a cute way to show how time flies.

There are many scrapbook papers available for the holidays, as well as cutouts, stickers, lettering, and stamps and other embellishments available for your scrapbooking delight. Keep in mind though, that some of the most creative page layouts will come from your own imagination. Even simple papers and themes can be really outstanding if you are focusing on great pictures.

Set aside some extra copies of pictures or extras that are not quite perfect enough for the family scrapbook. Let your kids do their own layouts in a simple scrapbook of their own. These scrapbooks will become cherished mementos of Christmases past as your little child grows into a parent with a family of their own.

Mini scrapbooks are also fun for taking with you when you visit family and friends for the holidays. A small scrapbook can be just the thing for keeping up with scrapbooking when time is short. These are especially fun for kids and can be made with inexpensive photo albums so your child can have fun looking through pictures of loved ones without risking damage to the family albums.

Remember that the idea is to preserve memories and spend time together – so don’t stress out about getting perfect layouts or organizing things a specific way. A finished album is much more fun than a box of “someday I’ll finish this” pages, so don’t get wrapped up in perfection. Just enjoy the process and enjoy your memories.

Scrapbook present for mom and dad?

I have a big bundle of scrap book paper and I wanted to use it for my mom and dad’s christmas gifts. Any ideas?

A scrapbook is a great idea. You are a bit limited on time so use a book that you can add to – finish now what you can then you can always add to it later – for additional gifts later as you run across photos or items you want to put in. A book with page protectors that you can slide the layouts into and move them around to put in chronological order for instance. Find some photos later and you can add them with no problem. After all, is a scrapbook ever really finished?

You don’t mention how many photos you have, but if you are limited you could do some pages with just one photo and some journaling about what you remember about the photo or the event, how you felt about your parents at that time or what the event meant to you. Enlist brother, sisters, Aunts, Uncles or anyone who may have photos or stories that can help you with the journaling.

I always like to do a cover page – which sort of announces what the book is about. A nice photo of the 2 of them and their names – possibly the date of their marriage. If you have some photos that you don’t use for your layouts, but you want to put them in, you could do a collage for the last page of the book.
