Each year I am more and more hesitant to get the boxes of decorations down for Christmas. I wonder how I used to be so excited to do this when I was a child and how it has become such a task as I’m older. I love Christmastime and all the lights and music, but now that my view is more long term I find that I can’t escape the inevitable day in January when I have to take everything down and put it away.
For years I’ve been increasingly more efficient in the packaging and take down of the decorations. 10 years ago I used to carefully separate the different Christmas ornaments and package them in groups, which then had to be carefully remixed each year on the tree. After applying some project management skills to the Christmas tree setup, I have been able to get the total tree set up time down to 45 minutes. First, to save the environment and your house from fire hazards, go artificial! The artificial trees with the lights already on, seem to be a great option. However, I am electronically jinxed. If I purchase anything with bells and whistles (or lights) attached they will inevitably break with just a few uses.
After purchasing your perfect tree, the key is to apply the decorations first before the lights. Be sure to affix them to the branches sturdily, preferable 4 inches from the end of the branch. Avoid any balls or breakable decorations. Plug the lights into the outlet you will be using and begin with the lights from the bottom of the tree, zigzagging horizontally until you get to the top. Keep the lights towards the front of the branches for easy take-off.
If you have a spare basement or closet, simply move the tree into there during the off season. Otherwise, remove the lights but leave the ornaments on the branches. Take your tree apart and pack in the box with the ornaments still on. Next year, simply arrange the branches with the ornaments already on them. Do a little bit of rearranging of the branches so they aren’t flattened out anymore.
As for the other decorations, try separating them out in boxes depending on where they go in the house. Instead of grouping together by type of decoration, group by room name and label accordingly. This will also help to store the items you need to remove to put up the decorations, keeping them in the room labeled box also.
