How do you crosscut fabric?
I am trying to do a pattern from Spotlight (this is my first time doing any sort of machine sewing) http://www.spotlight.com.au/inspiration/projects/modern-christmas-quilt-1/
The instructions state to “crosscut” fabric. And I don’t know what it means. Can someone please explain what it means, and if possible how it relates to this pattern.
Thanks ![]()
drip: that wasn’t the part I was referring to.
Thanks everyone else for telling me what the cross cut meant.
I’m doing this quilt as a practice quilt, and is only being given to my cats, so I don’t really care what it looks like. It’s just something to occupy my spare time.
This is my first sewing ‘project’, I have made small, simple things such as bags, and can sew in a straight line, edge etc.
Here is a diagram that explains cross grain, straight grain and bias as well as and explanation of cross cut. http://whipstitchfabrics.com/blog/showdown-bias-tape-vs-cross-cut-fabric/
My first quilt was the log cabin block, from a family magazine, using dark and bright colors. There were a few errors, but it is still my favorite.
Since then, a few things I have learned –
(1) Cut the strips from selvage edge to selvage edge. This way you have little or no piecing of the strips as they are going to be approximately 42″/106cm long.
(2) Be sure to cut off the selvage edges and do not use them as they pucker.
(3) Cut just enough to make one block. Make the block and then, if there are any errors in the pattern, you can correct them before cutting out all the pieces and finding they are wrong.
If you need info for applying the binding and mitering the corners, scroll down this page for instructions and graphics – http://www.craftandfabriclinks.com/TIPS/assemblebindqlt.html
Best wishes for a successful project.
