“A Charlie Brown Christmas” is a heart-warming holiday classic that has aired every year since its debut in 1965. For many, the Peanuts Christmas special is a holiday staple, and the season doesn’t really begin until they’ve sat down on the couch to watch it, bundled up under a warm blanket, with popcorn and cups filled to the brim with hot chocolate or eggnog.

Cartoonist Charles M. Schulz–creator of the beloved “Peanuts gang”–wanted his Christmas special to have the religious meaning that was central to his own experience of Christmas. He also wanted it to include snowy scenes, ice skating, and other winter scenes that recalled his native Midwest during the holidays.

The premise is simple: Charlie Brown complains to Lucy about the overwhelming materialism that he sees everywhere during the Christmas season, and how the holiday has become completely commercial.

In fact, even his little sister, Sally, seems to have fallen into the trap of excessive materialism when she asks Santa Claus for ten and twenty dollar bills and explains that all she wants is her “fair share”. His dog, Snoopy, has decked out his dog house in every Christmas Decoration imaginable and has even entered it into a Christmas decorating contest.

Lucy suggests to Charlie Brown that he can get into the holiday spirit by directing the school Christmas pageant. Hoping that this will help, he accepts. Unfortunately, the pageant turns out to be a frustrating struggle, and Charlie Brown ends up feeling even more depressed.

Charlie Brown attempts to restore the proper spirit by getting a Christmas tree. While Lucy suggests that he get something modern-meaning a pink or purple aluminum tree-he chooses a forlorn little fir Christmas tree, because he feels the little tree needs him. Linus is surprised that they still make wooden Christmas trees. When Charlie Brown shows up at the pageant rehearsal with the tree, everyone turns on him for getting such a miserable little tree.

Exasperated, Charlie Brown calls out: “Isn’t there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about?” Linus steps up and explains that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ, and that it’s about peace and good will toward all men. The film ends when everyone from the Peanuts gang decorates the tree and they discover that it’s not such a bad little tree after all, and all it needed was some love. They all wish Charlie Brown a merry Christmas and everything ends well.
