Christmas Party is in 1 Week?

My husband and I are having our first Christmas party together in our new house. We’ve invited some family and friends, but not everyone knows eachother. We’re doing a potluck and White Elephant Gift Exchange. What are some other ideas that will get people talking and having fun?

I don’t know how formal your party will be, but this is something we do in education that participants seem to love. I’ve used it at high school level, so you may not feel it’s right for your party. But if you do, it’s very simple and quite fun.

Make a list with a series of interesting statements about the guests. They don’t have to be facts you know about them, they can just be things that might be true about them. (I’ve given you a sample list below, but you should make one that fits your area and the things that would represent your group.)Make copies of the list – one for each guest. When they arrive, give them each a copy and a pencil, and their “assignment” is to get names of other guests that match the statements. They do this by circulating around and asking questions, such as “Hi, I’m Carla, do you have any grandchildren?” If the answer is yes, then I write that person’s name on my paper next to the statment. I keep circulating and asking people’s names and my questions. The goal is to find a person at the party to match every statement, and get all their names! The guest who answers all questions first gets a prize. This can be done while guests are still arriving, and while they are having a beverage and appetizer.

I often print out the statements on a sort of tic-tac-toe chart. You can make it as decorative as you like, including placing Christmas icons around the statements. Perhaps you could make the statements all related to Christmas, such as “Who has to buy more than 30 Christmas gifts?” or “Who has spent Christmas in Hawaii?”

Who takes some type of classes?
Who is a member of a gym?
Who has a dog and a cat?
Who has five siblings?
Who likes to fish?
Who drinks Pepsi?
Who is left-handed?
Who visited San Francisco recently?

Who has grandchildren?
Who can recite Humpty Dumpty?
Who can name five other people in the room?
