BIG fight with hubby. Who is right?
I do love my hubby so this is not a rant but….he complains A LOT. Usually about work. I get sooooo tired of hearing it. I try to keep my mouth shut because he hates it if I tell him to cheer up. Last night I was out late grocery shopping and was dead tired when I got home. He looked at the gift I bought our dayhome provider and got mad. He didn’t like it. I LOST it on him! I told him how sick I was of his constant complaining and I was tired and doing most of the housework (incl. his chores) and looking after our toddler and working part time AND organizing all our holiday parties. He said that it was my choice to work so hard and have people over for the holidays so I shouldn’t complain about it and that my outburst ruined Christmas for him. This is the first time in 12 years that he’s had ANY Christmas spirit and I ruined it. Now I keep apologizing for that but I still feel a bit resentful. Any advice?
You are both wrong and both right. First him. He needs to communicate his feelings: right. He is spreading negativity: wrong. Now you. You expressed disapproval of his negativity: right. You let it build up until you exploded: wrong.
You both need to change your conversations with each other. He needs to be able to get things off his chest without dragging you down in the process. You need to be able to express how you feel about his attitude without him becoming mad at you.
There is no simple solution. You both just need to practice your conversations with each other. Try changing what you say or how you say it. Try not being bothered by what you hear. Try to be more empathetic. Try to make sure you are being true to your feelings while listening to his complaints. This will take practice over time.
