My 3 year old has separation anxiety ?

I’m a SAHM, she has not needed a sitter until recently my husband’s schedule has more free time and we are trying to slowly get out alone. We have left her twice, each time we say good bye and she has the most stunned freightened look on her face, after we leave she will hide under a blanket and just lay there with tears and quiet crying she starts gasping. So each time we have left her for about 45 minutes and I hold her when we get back it takes her 15 minutes to stop gasping and wimpering. I’m not sure if this is normal and I feel so horrible because we have a strong attachment.

The obvious answer would be to ask a friend who has a child around the same age about watching her – if she’s busy playing, etc. it won’t be so difficult for her. Prepare her by having playdates during the day – where you leave for a 1/2 hour…an hour…hour & a half… let your friend do the same (christmas-shopping time is here so now’s a good time). The only way she’s going to learn is to know you’ll be back. If you don’t have a close friend, then you’ll need to engage a sitter to help you out with this in the same manner. I was a SAHM of 3 and I never had this problem because my kids were always playing with other kids – since yours is an only child, it’s a little more difficult, but you NEED to get her past this. Preschool is right around the corner – you don’t want her to be “that one kid” who is kicking and screaming when it’s time for you to leave, getting the other kids all worked up.
