H is an interesting letter. Pick a text at random and you’ll probably find that there are a lot of Hs in it — it will probably be about the 9th or 10th most used letter. The reason that H is so common in English, however, is because it combines so frequently with other letters: ch, gh, ph, rh, sh, th and wh. If you only counted those instances where H appears on its own, it would be quite a different story.
Scholars and writers have debated for hundreds of years whether H really is a letter; some learned men in previous centuries described H as merely a breath or an exhalation. The fact that many people are still not sure whether to say a historian or an historian, a hotel or an hotel shows the continuing confusion over H’s status. Many accents of English (eg Cockney) drop it (‘ouse and ‘ome).
Names beginning H are well represented on Interbrand’s top 100 brands for 2009. There’s Hewlett-Packard, Honda, H&M, HSBC, Heinz, Hyundai, Hermes and Harley-Davidson. Note that most of these names are the surname of the company’s founder. When it comes to choosing an ordinary English word to base a brand or business name on, few companies choose a word beginning with H.
If your customers live in an English-speaking country, Scandinavia, Germany or Japan, there shouldn’t be any problem about having a name beginning H. People speaking a Germanic language (such as English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, and German itself, of course), as well as Japanese speakers, will be able to pronounce H without difficulty. If your customers live in France, Italy or another country which speaks a Romance language, then it is not a good idea to torture these people by making them try and pronounce H — they find it a difficult sound. They are not going to want to say your name out loud, and you will lose valuable word-of-mouth recommendation.
Beware of including H as an initial in your name in English-speaking countries, as the pronunciation haitch (as opposed to Standard English aitch) can often cause the speaker to be teased or considered lower-class or from a marginalized group.
