Office Affairs – they’ve probably been responsible for more ruined careers (and marriages) than any other single factor. The problem is though that being human animals we are emotionally driven beings.
Let’s be honest here, if you’ve been in the workplace for any length of time at all it’s almost a certainty that at one point or another you’ve developed the ‘hots’ for a co-worker – if not, then you’re either a saint, or dead from the waist down!
Research shows that the incidence of intimate workplace relationships is increasing. It’s hardly surprising, people are having to work ever longer hours these days, and work simply represents the best (or even only) opportunity to meet with potential partners on a meaningful basis.
So, you’ve formed a warm relationship with a co-worker and you suspect that it’s going to lead to more. What do you do? Ask 2 questions before going any further:
- Firstly – Are you married or in a permanent relationship already? If the answer is yes, then don’t take this thing any further. Word will eventually get out and It really will only lead to heartache for you, your partner and your new lover. Apart from anything else, it’s immoral and cowardly.
- Next – Does your company have rules forbidding romantic associations between co-workers? If so, then I would strongly advise either breaking it off before it goes any further. If you aren’t willing to do that, then one of you needs to leave, it’s that simple. I consider such rules to be violations of basic human rights, and many countries outlaw them, but some don’t. So consider your career; if you’re caught then you are likely to be fired and you’ll find it a lot more difficult then to find a new employer.
OK, you’ve cleared up the previous two items. Both of you still want to pursue this thing further. So, the thing to do here is to establish some basic “rules of engagement”:
- Don’t use the office as a place to flirt! It’s embarrassing to those around you and will eventually stir up bad feeling. Stay professional in your dealings with each other and save the flirting for after hours.
- Don’t play favorites with your new partner. Treat him/her in the same way as your other co-workers. This is especially true in a manager/subordinate relationship (highly not recommended by the way!).
- Make sure that you refrain from using the company email system to send any intimate messages. Email is regularly monitored by most companies to ensure that it isn’t being abused. Also, more than one life has been destroyed by such emails getting out into the outside and being circulated worldwide in days. Be warned.
- If the two of you are getting very serious then you really might want/need to give serious consideration to one of you transferring to another department if possible. You’ll find that a little separation makes things a lot easier!
- Finally, you need to consider what happens when/if the relationship cools, or even worse, turns totally sour. Yes, I know – you’re in love, it was meant to be, true love lasts forever, etc. Sorry, but you need to get real here. Far more relationships end within a few months than last forever. Are you both able to handle the situation if this does occur? Things can get really nasty in this situation and many careers have been ruined. You need to seriously consider the possibility that one of you might have to seek new employment and this needs to be discussed between you both up-front.
So, there you go. If you’re in a relationship with a co-worker or think you want to be, then tread very carefully. My advice in general would be to resist the temptation, but if this isn’t possible then these tips should help.
Good Luck!

All the stores have cute sweater dresses. H&M has some really cute ones to wear with leggings. I think the Ugg boots are a little outdated.
