Childrens birthdays can be exhausting! This article provides some ideas to take the expense and hassle out of your child’s birthday or celebration as well as allow you to spend some quality time with them. Make your child’s birthday joy and excitement last for longer than it takes them to open their present, both on their birthday and at their party (if they have one) as well as in the lead up to their birthday. All you need is a little preparation and planning. If you have limited time, or money, try just one of these ideas out for yourself.

  • Create a Mystery Birthday Present

A mystery birthday present can take a variety of forms, depending on the amount of thought, time and effort that you want to put into it. Obviously you could quite quickly and easily put together a present with multiple layers of wrapping, using newspaper to fill in the under-wrappings. You could even put clues, or smaller presents, in between each of the layers to ensure that your child excitedly unwraps only one layer at a time. This is usually adapted into a game of pass-the-parcel at childrens birthday parties.

What only my beautiful mother thought of doing (at least amongst my friends and family!) was to actually hide my birthday present and then create clues for me to follow to find it. With a bit of preparation, time and imagination the clues could be as simple as a woollen string leading around your house and yard to the present (in my case, the present was a tent already set up in our backyard!) or alternatively create simple rhymes and riddles. If you want to prolong your child’s excitement, you could even set a time period between each clue, for example, 10 minutes. Be careful though – if your child cannot solve the clue they may get upset so you had best have a back up clue ready.

  • Bake and Decorate Your Child’s Birthday Age Cake

If you enjoy spending quality time with your child, and he or she likes to help you in the kitchen, ask them to help you bake and decorate their birthday cake. If you want to keep the birthday cake a surprise, then this idea is not for you.

It is very simple to make a birthday cake in the shape of whatever age your child will be turning, using everyday cake tins that you may already own. Get on your knees, search the farthest depths of your cooking cupboard and dig up those tins! You can bake the cake using separate tins then cut the cakes to make the shapes you need and mould it altogether with icing.

It is easy to cheat when it comes to the baking, by using pre-packaged cake mixes. That does not matter – these are even simpler for your child to use. If you do not already have a recipe to make a simple icing, then do a quick search on the internet or ask your friends or family. A simple recipe will not be difficult to find for free. Once your cake is iced, have your child choose their favourite lollies and chocolates and decorate their birthday cake with a bright edging.

This is really quite a quick and easy birthday cake idea that can be easily adapted to suit any birthday age. Such a birthday cake can also be quite effective at childrens birthday parties and provides an excellent photo opportunity for any parent.

  • Hand Make Your Child’s Birthday Card Using Crafts & Pressed Flowers

With some forethought, you could easily arrange a lazy Sunday afternoon of fun for yourself and your child or children hand making cards. If you do this a few weeks before your child’s birthday then they can help you make the card and will probably have forgotten by the time their birthday comes around. It is not difficult to make a birthday card or invitation quickly using a home computer, however this does take some of the good old-fashioned fun out of the project.

Children love to do arts and crafts and it is very simple to show your child how to add some pressed flowers to the front of their card. However, you must already be prepared with your pressed flowers! The flowers can easily be picked from your own garden, or your neighbour’s garden with their permission. However, the flower press could be improvised using a number of household objects such as heavy telephone books, book ends or heavy paperweights or by using two pieces of wood pressed together with an adjustable screw in each corner.

It is important to remember that before you press your flowers you first place them between sheets of baking paper to protect them from whatever you are using to press them. It is ideal to leave your flowers in the press for a few weeks before attaching them to your card.

Once the flowers have been pressed they can make a textured addition to the front of a birthday card you can give to your child. The card can then be kept as a keepsake with special memories of your afternoon of crafts for both you and your child to share.

So, there you are. You can use each of these budget childrens birthday ideas individually or, if you have plenty of time for preparation, altogether. If you are trying to organise a last minute birthday party for your child on a budget, using all three ideas together can equate to half of your party activities planned. You will just need to get all of the materials together. Add a few birthday party favourites like balloons, sweets and other children to join in the fun and you should be well on your way to a successful birthday celebration.

Further, these ideas could be applied to a number of different celebrations if you are looking for preparations which your eager children can also help you with. The emphasis here is enjoying quality time with your child on or for their special day.

Need help creating a rhyming party invitation. It’s for a christmas party (no kids!). Funnier the better.?

I started this one:

Twas seven nights before Christmas
And no kids were in the house
The only thing stirring
Was the drink-mixing mouse

Our house will be decorated
in a festive air,
in hope that our friends
would soon be there!

But I’m not loving it.

Suggestions?

To get some answers, I’d ask this in another category –one where you’re likely to get “poets” or funny people or Christmas themes, etc, not cooks.
