After you’ve selected a guest list and mailed the cooking invitations, you should probably begin planning your menu. You don’t want to make a meal that is going to require your presence in the kitchen most of the night or that is something you’ve never made before. Choose something simple.

Keep your guests’ preferences in mind when you plan the menu, too. For example, if your dinners invitations include someone who is a vegetarian find a meal that you can create without meat that will be enjoyed by all the guests as well. Pasta makes a perfect choice in these cases. If you’re not sure what your guests enjoy eating or if they have any special dietary concerns, give them a call a few days before the dinner party once you know they’ve received the formal dinner invitation.

Generally, you’ll also want to have something prepared for dessert. If you’re not a baking whiz, you could make a simple chocolate mousse topped with whipped creme and a chunk of chocolate bar or sprinkled with nuts. Cheesecake is another popular choice. Make sure to also have some fresh coffee brewed and ready to pour by the time the meal is over so guests won’t have to wait for a cup.
