Are there any formal occasions in Paris at Christmas?

I plan on writing a modern-day love story at some point in the future, which will take place in Paris around Christmas time. At one point in the story, I want to have the principal characters in the story attend some sort of party or event where they’re required to dress formally. I’ve done a bit of online research about what goes on in Paris at Christmas, but I haven’t found anything that someone would wear a dress for. Can anyone please give me any ideas? Thanks in advance.

No. Christmas is very much a quiet affair in France where families gather, go to church if they are Christians, and enjoy nice food together either at home or in a restaurant , exchange a few presents, but there is no formal celebration where people would wear evening dress at all.
New Year’s Eve is when there are parties and dances, and some places have a “bal de la Saint Sylvestre”. However whilst people may dress up for the occasion, very few, save the extremely wealthy, will wear formal evening dress and if they do it will most likely be a privately organised ball or a special gala for glitterati that raises money for charity like the “bal de la Croix rouge” (raising funds for the Red Cross). The rest of the population do not wear long dresses, tuxedos, etc… as is done for formal occasions in America when they are celebrating. All the occasions where in America things are very formal are much played down in France and whilst people may look very elegant, they do not wear flashy evening dress, and certainly not for the opera or dances in restaurants/ cabarets or even a formal occasion at the Town Hall. There are no graduation balls for instance, and at French weddings bridesmaids, when there are some, are little kids and never grown up female attendants in long gowns or men in “black tie”and dinner suits.
Remember that ever since the French revolution balls and dances in France have been occasions for ordinary people to enjoy themselves and where they wear very simple dress. Here is a fairly typical video of a New Year evening celebration:

You could have your couple attending a special soirée at the Opera Garnier, though you would have to find some twist in the story to explain why they attended this function, and it would have nothing to do with Christmas, but would be a gala, or a charity event.
