“Love Never Dies” is the name of a musical theatre sequel to the long running show – The Phantom of the Opera. This is a long awaited development for the Phantom, although it is rare for any musical show to have a sequel. In fact I can’t really think of any other examples at all right now. The novel on which the phantom is based did have a sequel though, and that was called “Love Never Dies” as well, so it’s logical to assume that the new musical will be based partly on that book. Its not as simple as that though, because there was also a book written by Frederick Forsyth in 1977 which was called “The Phantom of Manhattan” and that is a sequel to Andrew LLoyd Webber’s musical, rather than to the original novel.

The long story of bringing this new musical to the stage also involved bringing Fredrick Forsyth, well known author of “The day of the Jackal” and “The Odessa File” onboard the original writing team for the new project but it seems he was subsequently dropped. “The Phantom of Manhattan” did not do terribly well, at least not in comparison with his other books, so it has stil to be seen how much of the storyline for Love Never Dies will owe to each of these different novels. The write who has been brought in for Love Never Dies however, is none other than  Mr Ben Elton, who is also a novelist in his own right but is better known as a stand up comedian, and as the writer of “We Will Rock You”, the smash hit London musical based on the songs of Queen. 

At one point it was intended to launch Love Never Dies in three cities at the same time, an ambitious project indeed which would have seen casts taking to the stage in London’s West End, New York’s Broadway and also Singapore but the logistics of such a feat evidently proved too much even for the team behind Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, Sunset Boulevard and many other top musicals, so the expected timing now is for Love Never Dies to open in London in March 2010 and then on Broadway in November. This continues a trend of opening in the West End first, where costs are a little less, as has been pioneered by Sister Act recently at the London Palladium.
