I have 3 stepkids – No call this year for Mother’s day. Anyone else???
I’ve been thier stepmom for the last 9 years)theydon’t live with us (13, 14 and 17), but spend every other weekend, vacations, & holidays with us.
They used to be very loving, especially the youngest 13 yr old girl. Since last year her Mom let her have a boyfriend and she’s become very mean and self centered to me & my husband.
We always take them fun places (trips to Mexico & NYC, islands, ect).. and she didn’t even get us Christmas or Birthday cards and no call on Mother’s day. Before she would always be considerate.
I feel very bad that I’ve invested so much time and energy ( I do lots of little extra things for them all the time) with these kids and now they could care less if I’m alive. I feel hurt and a bit mad…my stepdaughter’s birthday is coming up and don’t feel like I want to go out of my way anymore…
Any else been a similar situation, and how did you get over it??
Ok a mom that grew up in a step parent environment and was married and a step mother and now a divorced mom of kids who have a step mom I can look at this from 3 angles:
1. the child
2. the step mom
3. the bio mom
Do not take it as if they do not loveor care for you. They are at their Mother’s and they are probably only thinking of her today. I am sure that they feel that their loyalty is being torn and they do not want to hurt anyone.
Maybe when they come back they will say something or have a extra hug or something for you.
They are not adults, they are kids in a tough situation.
My children did not call their stop mom today and I asked them if they wanted to. No it is Mother’s day not stepmom’s day.
So maybe start a new tradition (Next sunday they are home is Step Mom and Step KId day) you do something meaningful for everyone
New families need new traditions!
Remember they are not adults they are kids and are self centered.
Love them without thinking of what they will give to you. That is not the reason you should be doing it.
If you start doing less for them and treating them different then you stop being the adult.
As a step parent we face horrid situations. Kids that don’t really want us around. kids that would love for their parents to be back together and a lot of times a lot of unjustified anger is heaped on us. We cannot resort to being cruel or withholding our love, we have to respond by doing all we can to show we love then and are here.
No matter what they do we will love them
I hope this helps
You know you are a great step mom
Your hubby knows it and deep down they do to
Don’t let this ruin your relationship
bitter you could destroy your marriage and your entire family!
