Why do Christmas Nativity scenes show Jesus being born in a stable?
The actual story never says Jesus was born in a stable. It says he was born in a “manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
I’m not sure if anyone on R&S is aware of this, but the word “manger” literally means “guest room” in the original context. It has come to mean stable now, but that’s only because of people misinterpreting the word in the story.
Translating the occurrence into modern english, the hotel had no vacancy, so Joseph and Mary stayed at a friend’s place, and that’s where the baby messiah was born.
I suspect it was a mistake in translation or transcription, similar to the belief that the number of the beast was 666, instead of 616, or that Moses had “horns” coming from his head instead of “rays,” but when and where was the mistake originally made?
Also, the three “Wise Men” weren’t present at the birth.
