The new Tim Burton Alice In Wonderland movie is upon us, and fans of his work are suitably thrilled. However, is Burton playing it too safe now? After films like The Corpse Bride and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, is Burton treading water as a director? Plus, how is this latest film going to do at the box office?

Sure, it has Johnny Depp in it and (as ever) Helena Bonham Carter alongside a great cast and some incredible visuals, but is this a case of Burton playing it safe? I do have to wonder after past glories such as Ed Wood and The Nightmare Before Christmas that with Alice In Wonderland Burton has become a little stuck in a rut of the audience expecting one sort of thing from him now.

This is a shame, as a director with such creative scope should be able to stretch himself beyond the comfort zone now and again. I could be wrong of course, and this latest extravaganza may be altogether something truly special. Sadly, reviews and word of mouth for Alice In Wonderland are confirming the fear that this may be a trip down the rabbit hole too far for Burton.

While I may have my reservations about the film, there is no denying that it is a visual feast for viewers to enjoy, and has a superb supporting cast including Stephen Fry and Matt Lucas in roles that are sure to become very well remembered for them. It’s just as a whole the Alice in Wonderland movie seems to be a bit much of a muchness. Plus, due to Johnny Depp’s star power, the character of the Mad Hatter has been shoehorned into far more scenes than the story actually calls for.

The Alice In Wonderland movie looks set to be a big hit with his core fans as well as a large number of casual movie fans, but as a film in its own right it doesn’t seem to have the strength to stand on its own. It’s very much a part of the Tim Burton pantheon, and viewed on its own merits may well come across as something that looks wonderful but boasts little in the way of artistic merit. That said, fans are lapping it up, along with the official Alice in Wonderland movie merchandise that is available.

One of Burton’s forthcoming projects is an adaptation of the gothic vampire soap opera Dark Shadows, which, while I’m sure it will carry his particular visual flair, may also offer something a little weightier than CGI fests such as the new Alice In Wonderland movie.

He is an English multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, working a style that blends progressive rock, folk, ethnic or world music, classical music, electronic music, New Age, and more recently, dance. His music is often elaborate and complex in nature. He is best known for his hit 1973 album Tubular Bells, which launched Virgin Records, and for his 1983 hit single “Moonlight Shadow”. He is also well known for his hit rendition of the Christmas piece, “In Dulci Jubilo”

What’s your favorite song by him?

Yay!!!
Wow, is the genius who composed “Tubular Bells” at the age of 18 really 57 now?!

Mike is the second longest-serving of ‘The List’, as I’ve been listening to “Tubular Bells” since early childhood, and got into the rest of his work in my mid-teens. So… there is a lot I like, both ‘song’ and instrumental, and as such this is quite a long, random list :~

@ Captain F ;)
You probably already know, ‘Five Miles Out’ was inspired by a near-miss mike had in his light-aircraft. I always find it interesting what people draw on to put into their music!
