Singing has been a passion of mine since infancy. My childhood memories have always revolved around music. A typical day begins with the unique voice of Paul McCartney accompanying my mom while she made breakfast. A Smokey Robinson tune is being whistled by my father while reading his newspaper. The head-banging riffs of Metallica in full blast during the school bus rides, except on the days when this driver Ernie puts on his “The Carpenters” singles track.
Music has been a constant at special events too such as Valentine’s Day and Christmas. On Valentine’s Day, nothing is more familiar than the soothing voice of Miles Davis. And on Christmas, our family gathers around the piano singing Christmas carols of Old. So you see, music is deeply ingrained in me. It is therefore no surprise for any loved one to know that I want to learn how to sing.
My parents enrolled in me in one of those performing art schools. It is a bit of a stretch considering my family’s income. The luckiest girl in the world, I daresay. Not every girl gets to follow her dream with the headstrong support of her parents. The school for the performing arts is not prominent, but still respectable. Transferring to that school was the best life-changing moment of my eighteen years here on earth. My four-year stay in the academy trained me in the most brutal way. It has to be said that without the intense training and classes, I will be your typical, run-off-the-mill lounge singer. (My forte is jazz singing.) So on that blessed day, I packed my bags, said goodbye to my pet fish and crew, to pursue my goal to learn how to sing like the best of them.
The school of the performing arts does not only focus on music and the like. One of its’ main objectives is to build our character, to shape us into better persons that will nonetheless become better musicians and artists. My vocal coaches stress the importance of keeping our health in tip-top shape. We are required to work on our centre. That is, we have to keep our abdominal muscles strong. I may complain and rant about this little requirement but, the joy of having rock-hard abs!
We mostly do core-strengthening, cardio-vascular exercises, swimming and Pilates. We adhere to a very clean lifestyle. And when I say clean, it is almost bordering to extreme. Our drink of choice is plain, good, old water. You see, in singing, you have to keep your body hydrated. Singing is a sport and you cannot very well function if you are panting halfway through the game. Sports drinks and red bulls are a no-no. Not even juice or tea! Water is the clear and only choice if you want to produce the much needed lubrication for your vocal chords. As you may have already guessed, alcoholic beverages are evil, evil, evil. Along with its twin brother, the mighty cigarettes. Sure, smoking and drinking gin-and-tonics are fun, but if you are going to take your voice skills further, better kick the habit.
To learn how to sing professionally, you must study the science behind the voice. I learned about the anatomy of my sound-making body parts (I will reserve my geeky science talk for some other time!) and about the science of music (note reading and writing or composing). For me to fully grasp the concept of singing, I have to understand the technical mechanics of the said body parts and music. It is also a way for me to follow with ease the breathing techniques and vocal exercises. Say, I have to open my mouth in a certain manner for me to produce a specific sound.
Basically, what the school of performing arts imparted is that you are not only here to learn how to sing. You are here to build formidable self- discipline for you to take your passion to greater heights, which I proudly did.

is this okay to wear to the northshore music theater for a christmas carol?
im thinking of wearing black leggings that have sparkles on them and a white plain long sleeve shirt with a grey/black sparklyish dress thing.
the dress is just cotton so its not formal.
is that to dressy? (btw im going w/ my school)
I don’t think so… it sounds cute!! Maybe with just regular leggings without the sparkles… but if it looks good, go ahead!
Wear it with a pair of black flats. (that will make it look more casual.)
