When does humor based on race (which there is plenty of) actually become racist?

I was just watching Saturday Night Live this past weekend and there was a very funny sketch where they did a parody of the classic Christmas film It’s A Wonderful Life. In the sketch, they pretended that the movies was original all about Jewish characters. So in the sketch, all the characters were Jewish and it was full of Jewish stereo-types.

You also see all sorts of comedy these days that kind of makes fun of African American stereo-types. Its really funny for a white guy to be pretending to into stereotypical “black” things like gangster talk clothes, music, etc.

It just seems strange to me that the world of comedy is full of things that are about race. But racism is supposed to be bad and people are so sensitive about it.

When does humor based on race become racism?

What do you people thing about this?

I always thought that black comedians doing black jokes is hilarious. Same with Jewish people making Jewish jokes. I think Carlos Mencia (go ahead and thumbs me down) did racist jokes he went a little too far.

Another great place to shop for Christmas Music Parody products is Amazon. They have more than just books!

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. This CD serves up a mix of parodies and a batch of Yankovic originals. Weird Al’s setting of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” in Amish country is inspired. Yankovic turns U2′s “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” into a song about an unpleasant visit to the den…
