No matter how good or bad the playing is, in your opinion, sometimes you just want your privacy and want to isolate yourself from the sounds. By placing soundproof curtains along the wall that separates you from the practicing room, you will additionally dampen the sounds propagating from the wall to you. When the musician is using soundproof curtains in his room as well, the effect is effectively doubled.

Sound absorption

Sound dampening curtains are made of the thick and heavy material that is capable of effective sound absorption over a broad range of frequencies, including the frequencies of human voice and musical instruments. The sound absorption is the second mechanism in addition to sound reflection of preventing the sound from propagating where you don’t want it to propagate.

Sound absorption is especially important for a musician inside the practice room. If the sound dampening curtains would just reflect the sound back to the room, they would not have a much different effect than the walls. The sound would bounce all over the place, and the overall sound of the human voice as recorded, or the sound of a musical instrument as recorded would have many time delayed echoes added to it, and would become significantly distorted. That is why, especially for the practicing singer or musician, the sound absorption function of the sound dampening curtains is crucial.
