Wouldn’t it be great if Christmas time were stress-free; where we could be with family and friends and not be so caught up in the thick of thin things? My favorite memories of Christmas include doing things with my siblings, my wife and my children. I would bet that your favorite Christmas memories involve people and doing things with them, rather than things given or received. One of my favorite sayings is “The best things in life are not things.”

If you are having a difficult time getting the Christmas spirit, I would suggest you do one or all of the following.

1. Do something for someone else you wouldn’t normally do. This gets your mind off your own problems, and gets you into that ‘selfless’ mode. Doing good deeds unto others was taught by Christ. What better way to get that spirit than by doing as He taught. You might say a kind word to someone; just let them know you appreciate the work they do. You could help your neighbor rake up the leaves in his yard. You could give up your seat on the subway to someone else. The list is endless, you just have to get into that mode of thinking more about someone else, and less about yourself.
2. Read about the life of Christ in the New Testament. Look at the good things He did, and try to do even just one or two things that He taught. If you are a member of a religion that is not Christian based, read the teachings of your prophets, teachers or great men. Some things Christ taught; Forgive others that have hurt you. Ask forgiveness of those you have hurt. Help others that need it. Give time and/or money to those less fortunate. Don’t spend too much time thinking about the fact that they may have brought their troubles upon themselves; some may have, but many have not. It is not our place to judge that kind of judgment; it is our place to help others.
3. Put Christmas music into your life. The easiest way to do this is to listen to good Christmas music. I like a good mix of the sacred music as well as the secular, fun music. Music that talks of the events around Christ’s birth. Silent Night, and Away in a Manger are a couple of favorites. Jingle Bells and Rudolph are a couple of favorite fun songs. If you play piano, guitar or sing, get out some of that old Christmas music and go through it. There is something about being the maker of music that helps you get that Christmas spirit. Better yet, get together with a few friends or family and have a good old-fashioned sing a long. Not only will you have fun, but you’ll get an extra boost by helping others get that Christmas spirit.
4. Although you may not think of shopping as a way to get into the Christmas spirit, this can still help. Don’t wait until the last minute to get it done. Get it out of the way so you can enjoy the season without worrying who you haven’t bought for.
