I enjoy teaching art, so long as I don’t have to do it often. One of the questions I am asked when teaching is “Where do you get your inspiration from?” I have considered myself as an artist since I was a child and I say that I have never waited for artistic inspiration. I do not think that there is any such thing. Obviously there are “things” that I see feel and hear that make me feel good but they do not inspire me to paint. If you want to be a professional artist turn up at your studio and start work. If you sit around waiting for magic thunderbolts to hit your creative brain you will sit around for a long time waiting and you won’t produce a lot of work. No work means no cash coming in and therefore a starving family. My opinion is that only hobbyists wait for inspiration – professionals turn up at the studio and work.

Instead of “inspiration” I prefer to use the word “ideas,” and I find that the best ideas come as a progression on my work in progress. I turn up at the studio, study what I have been doing and something always comes to mind. I can then be selective. Do I follow this something or do I reject it and go in a different direction? These are creative decisions, not inspiration.

Sorry, but I think that inspiration is for the romantic that is playing at being an artist – not for the professional. I realise that this is not going to be a universally popular opinion, but I honestly think that “waiting for inspiration” is often used as an excuse for not doing any work.
