Church of Christ Members – is it true that you do not believe it is ok to play musical instruments at church?

And if so, why?

I went to a Christmas play at the North Atlanta Church of Christ this evening – it was very good and lots of fun – a friend of mine who was with me told me that the Church of Christ is against/does not believe in musical instruments being played during church/worship service – that all music, if it’s played at all is pre-recorded and that only the singer is “live” during services. Is this true?
Digital…that’s interesting. Ok, so it doesn’t specifically say to play instruments, but I don’t think it says not to either. Interesting how differently various denominations of Christianity practice/express their worship.
Checkmath and KittyKat – So does C of C believe that it’s ok to play pre-recorded music at church?

I was going to post the scriptures but checkmath beat me to it and said it very well.

Did you know that musical instruments were not introduced to the church until long after Christ died and that Martin Luther and others were against having any instruments in the church?

(from site posted below)
Regarding the use of instrumental music in church worship, the celebrated English scholar wrote:

Music in churches is as ancient as the apostles, but instrumental music not so: for it is now generally agreed by learned men, that the use of organs came into the church since the time of Thomas Aquinas, anno 1250. For he in his Sums has these words, “Our church does not use musical instruments, as harps and psalteries, to praise God withal, that she may not seem to judaize” (I.315).

And this, too:

They also observed that the early reformers, e.g., Martin Luther, and also Calvin and Knox (Presbyterians), protested against the use of instruments. The same could be said of Clarke (Methodist) and Spurgeon (Baptist). The men were the leaders of their respective movements.

Most people don’t have a clue when their denomination added instruments and that at one time, most of them did not have any instruments at all.

But slowly, man did his own thing and added what he wanted even though this and many other things are against God’s Word. There isn’t anything more beautiful than the harmony of voices singing praises to God as a congregation without instruments drowning out everyone with it’s screeching noises.

And, where I go, we do not have ANY instruments, not even recorded stuff. If a person feels it is wrong, according to the scripture, to have instruments, a recording of instruments is still worshipping wrongly. We have no choirs and everyone in the congregatrion sings every song together as we all worship together. I do not listen to any of this so-called “Christian music” with the bands, only a capella CDs which we have in our vans and home.

Study the scripture checkmath gave you but don’t go to the Old Testament as soooooo many people do. We aren’t under the OT Law so why go there to try and justify what we can do today when we have the New Testament which sets down the laws we should follow today? The New Testament tells us over and over to sing and make melody in our heart.

Read the article at the below link and then research more on their site to understand why we believe what we believe.

God bless you
