Most of today’s pop, rock, gospel and country songs are written using tine (and audience) tested techniques and form. There’s really nothing new about the structure of songs that wasn’t being used in the 30s by George Gershwin; in the 40s by Cole Porter; in the 50s by Elvis; in the 60s by the Beetles; in the 70s by Elton John, The Stones, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton – through today.
Most songs are structured in one of four ways;
Verse – chorus;
Verse – bridge – verse
Verse – chorus – bridge -chorus
Variations of the above structures.
Many Christmas carols and Hymns are good examples of the “verse-chorus” song structure. (Verse); “We three kings of orient are…….” (chorus): “Oh, star of wonder, star of night……….” The carol consists of several different verses, each followed by the same chorus. Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” uses this structure. (Verse) “It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday………” (Chorus, repeated after each verse) “sing us a song, you’re the piano man………”
The Beetles used the “verse-bridge-verse” structure in “Yesterday”. (Verse): “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away……….” (bridge): “Why she had to go I don’t know, she wouldn’t say……..” (return to verse material): “Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play…..” And the song ends or goes back to repeat the bridge and final verse material once more.
Another example of this structure is Willie Nelson’s “Crazy.” (Verse) “Crazy, crazy for feline’ so lonely………. (bridge) “Worry, why should I let myself worry………” (return to verse) “Crazy, for thinking that my love could hold you……….” (Tag ending) “Crazy for crying, crazy for trying, and crazy for loving you.”
Many of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Miley Cirus’ ballads and up-tempo song have a short “bridge” section before the final verse or chorus. The “bridge” usually has a melody and lyrics which don’t match those of the verses and chorus. It often comes close to the end, and is shorter than the verses and chorus.
My advice is to listen to some of the top songs on the charts and figure out what structure they are built upon. Hear how these top songwriters follow the time-tested “rules” of song structure. Then try writing your own songs using the information I’ve given you.
