Once a project has been animated and it is time to do a raytraced rendering, you need to carefully analyze what you plan to do with this animation. There are a variety of file formats and sizes that you can save your final animation as.
One way to save animations is to save them as a sequential sequence of still images. That is, if your animation is 20 seconds long (600 frames), you could render out Animation001.tif to Animation600.tif. Then, using Adobe Premiere, AfterEffects, or some other digital video editor, you can import this sequence where it can be output to a movie file (QuickTime, AVI, Real, or otherwise).
Most 3D applications allow you to designate the saving of such a sequence. The benefit of this sort of strategy is that if you discover you made a mistake in frames 40-90, you need not render the entire animation again-just those 50 offending frames. Once the new frames are rendered, they can be placed within your Premiere file where the movie can be output again. This often results in a large amount of time saved.
Another tangent benefit is that these tiffs or other stills can be converted into Adobe Illustrator files with programs like Adobe’s Streamline. The Illustrator files can then be imported as a sequence into Macromedia’s Flash or Adobe’s GoLive to create very small files (.swf) for vector-based Web distribution.
The drawback is that this series of still images (whether saved as a tiff, jpg, or otherwise) is quite space intensive. Your hard drive can quickly be filled to capacity with such a strategy. However, if you are working on a large project that takes a long time to render each frame, this technique could easily save you hundreds of hours’ worth of rendering. The second strategy is to output the animation as a movie file.
There are many formats of movie files, but the two most common are.avi and.mov. If you are on a Mac, you will most definitely output to.mov (QuickTime Movie files); if you are using a PC, you probably have more choices. When you render straight to a movie file, your final product is a short clip where all the frames are already linked together and can be played through some sort of media player immediately to see the results.
The benefit to this is you can see the animation instantly, while the drawback is that if there is a small problem, you may need to render the entire sequence from scratch. When you are ready to render your animation using raytracing or radiosity, you have the choice of rendering using a variety of sizes and compressions.
Ultimately, your project is destined for one of several media. Some of the higher range would include 3dmm film, broadcast television, or digital video. More mid-range would be projects intended for CD-ROM or to be played off a hard drive. The low-end media includes all Webdestined animations. The final destination should determine what size and compression you will use to render your animations.

MIDISoft Studio 4 saying “Not Enough Memory” on nearly brand-new laptop?
I was just recently passed down a great laptop from my parents for Christmas, and I’ve been trying to set it up with the MIDI sequencing software I’ve been using for 5 years now, MIDISoft Studio 4. However, no matter how many times I install, uninstall, and reinstall the program, I keep getting the same error when I try to load one of my song files (or ANYTHING, for that matter):
“Out of Memory. Recommend saving now… [blah blah blah]”
WHAT? This computer has PLENTY of Memory!
At any rate, has anyone else had this problem? Please let me know.
I am running:
Dell Inspiron 5100
Intel Pentium 4
Windows XP
Know that you’re not alone – I’ve moved from a Toshiba Quosimo laptop (it had issues) to a Lenovo M55p (also running XP) and have the same problems. I’ve even replaced the sound card with a Creative Labs 24bit Live with sound banks and no joy. But my copy of the absolutely ancient Midisoft (version 1) works just fine.
