Your Child is Starting Head Start- What Now. By Lizzie Ducking- If you have been a stay home Mother and have cared for your Child for the last three years it maybe difficult for you to be separated from him.

You maybe apprehensive about him being apart from you and many questions can cross your mind like will he cry, will the teachers be nice to him, will he find friends, will he ear his food or will he miss you? Rest assured that Children have the ability to adjust a lot better than we do, yes he might cry the first couple of days but he will adjust, he is among his peers and he will do what he see the others are doing. Nine times out of ten, he will enjoy himself.

It is important that on the first day of School to take him there because it will give you the opportunity to meet his Teachers and observe his environment. It is comforting to have first hand knowledge that he is in a clean and safe environment.

After you have dropped him off at School and have returned home, do not spend the day worrying about him. This is a good time for you to have some down time for a few hours. Now you do not have to joggle your time between your work and the Child. You can relax and take your time doing it.

When he return home from School have a meal or snack prepared for him preferable what he likes and ask him questions about his day. He will have a lot to tell you, it might take a while for him to finish but patiently wait for him to finish, and doing this will give you a better insight on what is going on in his classroom.

When the Teachers call for a conference, if possible please go. If we would attend conferences and support the School, it is a known fact that our Child will be treated right. A retired Teacher told me this years ago and it has been proven correctly. It is not that they will mistreat any of the Children but Parent who shows interest in their Child learning with the Teachers will get more of the Teacher’s attention.

This is a new phase in the Child’s life so be prepared to help and encourage him all we can because this beginning sets the stage for the rest of his School years so we will need to set the foundation for him to succeed.
