I just took down all my Christmas Decorations and replaced them with the usual decor and realized….?

What does your fireplace look like? What’s the room’s style?
If the wall comes out a bit where the fireplace is, you could paint it a different color to make it more the focal point in the room. Make sure the mantle is proportionate (not too small).

The problem I see is people tend to clutter the mantle with a bunch of small things, and that’s what it looks like, a bunch of small things. You need variety in height, in size. Make sure you have one really big piece. It could be a big mirror, or a really big painting (or a picture with big matting), or a large item of decor (such as a boat, a sculpture, etc.). You could prop a grouping of framed pictures in different sizes on the mantle against the wall, maybe adding a collection of candles and a pitcher or vase. Think collections, groupings — not spread out in uniform on either end. It doesn’t have to be from center out.
