Using lights to showcase your doll house collection offers a sense of realism that is often missing in an otherwise unlit little home. Not only does it make it look better, but it also makes it seem warmer and surreal.

Unfortunately, most beginners tend to shy away from adding lights, thinking that installing an electrical system may be too complicated. So they focus on building the house first, and wiring it later, making it a bit difficult to hide the wires once carpets and wallpapers are in place.

One of the first things to do in choosing an electrical system for your doll house is to ask yourself why you are lighting your doll house, and for whom? If a child is using the doll house mostly for play, then lighting may not be necessary. Some people are content to use a simple, overhead spotlight, highlighting the house as a whole and not its interiors.

If you do consider using lights, determine what effect you want to have, in order to choose the right electrical system that best fits your lighting needs.

There are three types of electrical wiring systems that suit most people’s needs:

The first is the Round Wire System. The round wire system directly connects each fixture to a wiring strip, which is often found in a doll house’s back or attic. Since each lighting fixture is connected to its own socket, troubleshooting is easier, as you can control each fixture. This is necessary if you want to include dimmers and flickering lights to simulate candle or fireplaces.

Still, round wire systems are more difficult to install and are more cumbersome, making them more difficult to hide. Main switches are usually found in the attic, or through a remote switch near the back of the doll house, while wirings and sockets are hidden behind moldings and under carpeting.

The second type is the Tape Wire System, typically manufactured by Cir-Kit Concepts. This system uses a thin, adhesive copper tape, delivering electricity throughout the house with a ring system. Since it’s thin, it is much easier to obscure: two coats of paint, or simple wallpaper, with a nice coat of shellac or varnish to prevent corrosion. There is no soldering involved, and installation requires no more than a few brads, scissors, and pilot pens. But while the tape wire system is easier to hide, troubleshooting is harder since everything is connected to a single ring system. Everything is routed through a single switch, so each light fixture cannot be remotely controlled.

The third type, the Hybrid System, is a compromise on both. Individual copper tape wire rings are used for each separate room, which in turn connects to a round wire socket. This gives you more leeway in controlling the lighting in each through a central switch or remote. Troubleshooting is limited to each room only, making repairs easier.

Whichever type you choose, make sure you plan ahead, and buy a switchboard that will accommodate all the bulbs in your little home. Keep a record of your system for future repairs and additions. Each system may have its own pros and cons, but have the same goal: making your doll house collection shine!
