What’s the best system to use to animate Christmas lights?

I’m looking to do our home with a spectacular light show this year. I would like to ideally have a chaser mode and maybe sync flashing. What is the best system to do this with? I would like to have as many zones as possible as well. Ideally I would like to keep the price down to under $200, I’ve seen one on E-Bay that I like, but I want to know what other people might have used.

There are three very good manufacturers that I know of: Light-O-Rama (LOR), Animated Lighting (AL) and D-Light. Each have their own system of customer support and public forums where you can discuss how to utilize each system to the best of your ability.

Of the three, LOR seems to be the favorite of the general public. I would think that it is the most popular among residential users. AL, while used by thousands of residential persons, is best suited for larger commercial displays and the manufacturer focuses on this market in particular.

D-Light is a favorite among the Do-It-Yourself as you have to assemble the kits.

Me? I use LOR because it appeared to be the easiest to use and the reputation of the company.

All that being said, you need to start now because of the amount of time it takes to program a song and get used to the software to run the equipment.

You can reasonably expect (using LOR) to take 10+ hours to program a song.

AL’s software has the ability to automate the song and you can get done in a shorter time (if you are expert).

The other option (if you do not want to program your songs) but you will have diminished capacity is to use a Lights and Sounds machine. These were sold last year for around $100- $125. You got 6 channels and 15 amps of service and the songs were preprogrammed MIDI files. I have heard, though, that this year you can upload your own MP-3 files for some models (I have not seen them).

Regardless, AL will cost you about $1000 to get started, LOR about $300 (including the software), D-Light much less.

There are some free programs (vixen) that can be used to program lights and it works best with D-Light.
