What would an LDS missionary serving in Philly want for Christmas? What about in Florida?
My twin cousins are on their missions and it’s their first Christmas away from home…what should I get them for Christmas? Ties are out…I already gave them like 6 of those. Something creative…one is in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and one of them is in Tallahassee, Florida…I’m so close to these boys…I don’t know what to get them though…please help (and something with a reasonable price please!!!!)
Food. Elders always, always appreciate food, and though the mission home gives them money every month, it’s never enough for the luxuries. And since it’s winter, it’s the perfect time to send sweets (they’re less likely to melt).
Also music. Missionaries are very limited on what they can listen to, and the music they have gets old very, very fast. I’m not sure if you’re Mormon yourself, but if so, get them the newer Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD’s (though I always kind of hated them myself), any EFY’s that came out after they left, possibly Michelle Tumes or Josh Groban…you should probably check with their parents, though, because they might already have these, and some mission presidents are more strict about music than others.
Um, anything personal, obviously. Make it small and light and durable, because they have to lug things around in their suitcases, and breakable or heavy objects just aren’t wanted.
You could also send them Christmas Decorations. When I was on my mission, my companion’s family sent her a mini Christmas tree (along with lights and ornaments), and we put that up. My family also sent some lights with their other gifts, and I put them up all through the inside of the apartment. It was awesome (especially since I was in that apartment for six months and never took them down).
And though this would take some time, you could track down some relatives and possibly their friends and get them all to leave a message on a tape recorder or something, and then send them the tape recorder. I also did that one year, and it was a great gift.
It’s incredibly hard to shop for a missionary, because they just can’t have much, and they already have everything you’d normally think to give them. It might not hurt if you got a package together and threw in a bunch of smaller things–scripture marking pens, a cap for their service days (do they have a favorite sports team?), stationary, Christmas-themed gifts. They could also probably get something light to hang on their walls. Most missionary apartments are fairly gnarly, and anything that could make them brighter is always welcome.
Do you know what part of Florida your cousin is in? I also served in that mission, and recently. He probably isn’t in the same areas, since the sisters were always sent out into the country and the elders served in the cities, but it would be awesome if I could send him to some of my old friends there.
Another great place to shop for Christmas Lds products is Amazon. They have more than just books!
