Knitting easy gifts for Christmas Presents!!!?
What’s something I can make for my friends, in their 20′s, all mom’s. I have tons of worsted weight yarn, and I’m looking for a fairly easy knit (Or even crochet) as I have 4 friends to make for.
I make handwarmers. They’re simple and take me about an hour per pair. I can get a pair from a small (3.5 to 4 oz) skein of Red Heart classic worsted weight yarn.
It’s a fingerless mitten, and is very simple. It’s also my own pattern, so I can give it away if I so choose, which I do. I use my 7mm knitting needles (whatever that means in US sizes, I don’t know but there’s a conversion chart at www.lionbrand.com) and two strands of the worsted weight yarn. I usually use two different colors because I think it’s prettier that way, but you don’t have to. Cast on 18 stitches and work in k1p1 rib for a couple of inches. Switch to stockinette stitch and continue another inch or so. Increase one stitch on each end for the next 3 knit rows (not on the purled ones.) After the increasing, you should have 22 stitches. Continue in st st until it reaches from just below your wrist to just above where your thumb meets your hand — usually about 4″ to 5″, depending on the person. Cast off 4 stitches on each side, so you’re left with 16 stitches. Continue in st st two more rows, then switch to k1p1 rib. Continue another inch or so and cast off. Be sure not to cast off too tightly.
Fold the handwarmer in half lengthwise and sew the seam from the bottom to where you cast off the 4 thumb stitches. Then, sew the seam from the top down to where you cast off the thumb stitches. Turn it right side out, and you have handwarmers.
I usually put both handwarmers on the needles at the same time — next to each other, each with its own yarn — so when I’m done I’m really done.
