to knit a Christmas stocking?
I’ve just recently learned a few of the basics of knitting: I can cast on and do the knit stitch…but that is all. I haven’t been able to master the purl stitch or anything beyond that.
I’m SUPER interested in learning to knit Christmas stockings. I’ve looked up some instructions online, but it’s all a bunch a steps that use terms that I don’t understand at all, considering I only know how to cast on and knit stitch.
Can someone TRANSLATE the steps into Lehman’s terms for me? Or better yet, does anyone know of a video that is helpful?
Anything would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
They have a list of abbreviations, and a little video clip with it, which shows you how to do the stitch that the abbreviation goes to.
Also, if you look in a book about teaching yourself to knit–or if you go online–you can generally locate an exercise in “How to read a pattern.” I know Maggie Righetti has a ‘dumb baby sweater’ in her knitting book, and she walks you through it as a way of learning how to read the pattern.
Do you have a yarn shop in your town? My local yarn shop has a bunch of awesome ladies that will help you if you go in there stuck–like you could show them your purl and they could show you what you need to improve upon.
Socks –that is all the Xmas stocking is, an overgrown embellished sock– are not the easiest things. You are braver than I was as a beginner! You will need to have an understanding of increases and decreases, knit, purl, possibly ribbing (just knit & purl), and picking up stitches at least. Any craft store should have a “Teach yourself to Knit” handout. I am thinking if you walk yourself thru that and you get a pattern that says ‘Easy’ you should be able to muddle thru.
