The Institute of Civil Funerals defines such funerals as “A funeral which is driven by the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family, not by the beliefs or ideology of the person conducting the funeral.”

Format for Civil Ceremony

Although favourite hymns and religious readings can be included, these types of funerals are predominantly non-religious in content.

The core of a civil ceremony is a scripted tribute about the life of the deceased. This personal tribute can be written by a family member or friend, but is increasingly drafted by a Civil Funeral Celebrant assisted by family and friends. The Institute (see details below) has a list of these Celebrants on its website. They also help plan and conduct the overall service.

Please note that there is no law in the UK requiring a religious leader (e.g. priest, rabbi) to conduct a funeral service.

The Funeral Ceremony

The Civil Funeral Ceremony provides a framework within which the family makes decisions about the style and content to enable them to celebration and pay tribute to the life of the deceased. Contents for civil funerals may include the following:

• poems;
• music – recorded;
• music – with live performers;
• stories from the life of the deceased showing the individual’s positive characteristics;
• quotations that relate to aspects of the deceased’s character and attributes.

The service can be held almost anywhere except religious buildings and churches. This format is appropriate for either a cremation or burial at any non-religious burial ground.

Example Structure

WELCOME

Celebrant welcomes mourners and offers words of comfort, e.g. via a reading or poem narrated by a friend or member of the family.

EULOGY

Celebrant shares memories of the deceased’s life. Additionally a poem can be read by a friend or family member.

PERSONAL REFLECTION TIME

This part of the ceremony may be accompanied by music or a moment of silence.

Costs

The fee for engaging a Funeral Celebrant is currently under £200. Additional costs will depend on the contents of the service, e.g. musicians and flowers and on the normal costs of burial or cremation.

Other

Please bear in mind that it is also possible to arrange a Civil Funeral before death – planning it with the Funeral Celebrant in the same way that the family would plan for the deceased.

Could someone name a song from “The Carol at the King’s” on BBC 2 on christmas eve?

The song/hymn or whatever it is was sang only by the choir, and it was just before the words from the priest and the song “O come all ye faithful”. It was in King’s College Cambridge and on BBC 2 and the song was sang at about 7:50. I doubt there’s a track listing sent out on the internet for this kind of thing, so i’m asking anybody who might have knowledge of this kind of thing. Thanks alot!
