When most people think of a singer with a wide vocal range, they think of Mariah Carey. She was once in the Guinness Book of World Records for having a five octave vocal range, although she is now believed to only possess a five octave vocal range. Whatever the range, it is much wider than any of us could ever hope to get, so how can we, as normal people, ever get close to a celebrity vocal range such as Mariah’s?
In the case of Mariah Carey, in some ways she was born with it. She is the daughter of an opera singer, so not only was she predestined to have vocal ability, but she was surrounded by music from the time she was born. In fact, there was never any doubt that she would be a singer. All of those years of singing around the house, listening to music, and performing meant that by the time she was an adult, she had a celebrity vocal range like no other.
Most of us can’t hit half the notes that Mariah can, but we can still learn to hit our notes confidently, with precision and power. By taking lessons and learning to sing properly, you can have a more limited range, but utilize it better. By learning to breathe properly, exercise your vocal chords, phrase and enunciate, and sing with power and confidence, you will turn into a real singer, instead of a karaoke wannabe!
We aren’t all born with Mariah’s pipes, and no amount of training or practicing will get us there. But, with the proper tutelage and a lot of practice, you can expand your range to include notes that you never thought you could hit. They might not be in the celebrity vocal range, but they can impress others and even surprise yourself!
