My handmade greeting cards hobby started about 6 years ago. I needed to have a beautiful album to put my wedding pictures in. This hobby then turned into a scrapbooking and card making addiction, but we’ll talk more about that later.

The purpose of this article is to introduce you to the essentials that you need to know, and how to start making handmade greeting cards. There is something here for the novice beginner and the expert who is looking for more specific information.

How many times have you searched the Internet for how to “make cards”, “scrapbooking supplies”, “the Cricut machine”, cards for businesses”, “handmade paper”, “card printing”, “custom greeting cards”, “personalized cards”, “photo card”, “homemade birthday cards”, “craft cards”, “….etc; well all the information you need is right here.

Making Handmade Cards

Making handmade greeting cards beautiful and professional looking is easier than you may think. I used to buy all sorts of craft supplies and embellishments (decorations) to make my cards look nice, but soon found less expensive and easier ways to make stunning cards and scrapbooks for any occasion. After years of buying expensive pre-made embellishments I discovered the “Cricut machine”, It was initially an expensive investment, but now I can customize any decoration I make. It has taken my scrapbooking and card making to an entire new level; I wish I had bought it years ago. There are many other ways to make nice looking handmade cards without expensive machines, such as Stamping, Iris Folding, Embossing, Punches, Stencils, Stitching, Paper Quilling and many more.

Cricut How To

If your looking for a die cutting machine for letters, words, images and pretty well anything you can think of, the Cricut is the machine for you. This machine makes handmade greeting cards, scrapbooks, bulletin boards, photo albums, personal gifts and many other items look beautiful, and specialized, by cutting out shapes from paper and other materials. The Cricut has a series of cartridges that when plugged into the machine, can make decorations for any occasion, like a birthday, wedding, Halloween the seasons, etc; but don’t panic, it does not have to be an expensive hobby. I will show you where to get discount scrapbooking and greeting card materials; and other ways that only require a pair of scissors and paper.

Discount Scrapbooking

Take a look in any Michael’s craft store for handmade greeting cards supplies and you’ll be astounded at all the available supplies, most of which are very pricey. It can be a very expensive hobby and I am always looking for ways to save money on my handmade greeting cards and scrapbook supplies. One of the best places I have found for my discount homemade greeting cards and scrapbooking materials is Amazon. Amazon has a large selection of scrapbooking supplies and a first-class selection of product reviews to check out before you buy anything.

In later articles we will look at making cards which only require using the inexpensive methods that were mentioned above (Embossing, Iris Folding, Punches, Paper Quilling, Stencils, Stitching, Stamping); most of these methods only require some scissors, paper and some patience.

I would suggest that when starting your handmade greeting cards journey, it be based on what you can afford, and getting enough information to make informed decisions; I will help you do that.
