A friend I’ve had since college just sent me an email on behalf of her 10 year old son. The email is asking for donations for the March of Dimes walk the boy will be participating in next month. The last time I heard from this friend was a Christmas card with a picture of her kids and her signature. That’s it. No letter, no personal note, nothing. She never responds to personal emails I send her with pictures of my son attached or to funny emails I sometimes pass along. Then today, out of the blue, I get a request for a donation.

Asking for a March Of Dimes donation is much different than asking for a personal donation such as a soccer fund riser. March Of Dimes doesn’t benefit the person asking. Because of this she probably feels justified asking. And the request probably has nothing to do with friendship. In any case, if you’re not interested, don’t reply. I’m sure she doesn’t expect everyone to reply.
