Dojo loach (weather loach) questions?

I have a forty gallon aquarium with a tiny little fantail goldfish in it. I know dojo loaches are often kept with goldfish because they can live in the same temperatures. I know everyone says goldfish grow large, but I got the little one for Christmas two years ago, and she’s always lived in the same aquarium. She also has short fins (she’s still a fancy though) unlike most of them who have long, flowy fins. Anyway, onto the dojo’s. How many can I put into the tank? I know they do best in at least pairs and they’re very active. I also heard they grow slightly large, but they’re thin and eel like. I think they’re very interesting and want to get some, preferably as many as possible. So, how many can I get to live with my goldfish?

I wouldn’t call Dojos “active”, as they spend most of their time sitting around, but they definitely exhibit bursts of speed, especially at night. In your tank, you’d be fine with 3 or 4 permanently, provided you keep up on the maintenance, which it sounds like you do. If you wanted more of them initially, you could try 5 or 6, but realize that you’d have to give away some of them as they grow, getting back to 3 or 4 as they reach adult size (around 8″).
