Outdoor Christmas decorations are a big part of every Christmas season. Aside from buying gifts for your loved ones and having a cozy Christmas dinner to enjoy on Christmas Eve, a lot of fun actually comes from the preparation work in anticipation of Christmas. In the weeks leading up to December, everyone is usually caught up with decorating their house interior, and sometimes forget about outdoor decorations which can really add a lot of neighbourhood atmosphere. There are actually many simple ornamental additions you can make to your outdoor area to spice up your Christmas. In this series of articles, we will discuss some basic ideas on how you can achieve that.
As with all tutorials, we always start from easy ones to kick-start your deco work. In this first article, you will learn how to make Christmas strips that hang below your roof. These can be considered extremely novice in difficulty so anyone can do it. Tools you need are a pair of scissors, your ladder (for climbing to the roof unless you are Kevin Garnett), 2-3 rolls of crepes paper (green, red and white makes for a nice Christmas color combination) and some masking tape.
To make the stripes, unroll your crepe paper to a suitable length that such it spans your whole roof length while having allowance for them to droop. A good gauge would be to unroll 1.5 to 2 times the length of your roof. Use your masking tape, stick them to the grooves of your roof at every 20 inches or so until you fill up your entire roof. Once you are done with one strip of color, do the same for other colors but make sure you stagger the distance between them slightly, so the three strips and overlapping one another.
And that’s all it takes! If you have done it right, you should see a nice blend of Christmas colors lining up the base of your roof. Go try it out and hope you like it!

How can my family celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas?
I want to do something different this year. I have always liked the things I have heard about Hanukkah, but I dont know much about the foods, decorations ect. I need some facts and ideas so I can start planing soon. Please help if you know how I can do this. If it works out, this might become a new tradition for my family.
I know many families with one Jewish parent and one Christian, or extended families who want to “blend”. A friend of mine used to celebrate both holidays, but compromised by using a potted Norfolk pine as a “Hanukkah Tree”, since he was too lazy to go out and cut one!
Since it’s the “Festival of Lights” (commemorating the one lamp in the Temple after the Maccabbees conquered the Greeks: “When the time came to light the N’er Tamid, the Eternal Light of the Temple, the Jews could find only one sanctified jar of oil marked with the seal of the High Priest. It was only enough to last one evening. The lamp was lit with this small jar of oil and, miraculously, stayed lit for eight days.”), This is why the Menorah is so important.
Lighting the Menorah
The menorah, or Hanukiyah, holds nine candles. Eight candles represent the eight days of Hanukkah, and the ninth, the Shamash, is used to light the other candles. The candles are placed in the menorah from right to left, but are lit from left to right. On the first night, only one candle is lit, but with each successive night, an additional candle is lit. On the eighth night, all the candles are lit. This ritual allows the menorah to become brighter and brighter with each successive night, commemorating the history of Hanukkah and the miracle of Judea.
Ideally, a Menorah should be kindled with olive oil and cotton wicks, as olive oil was used to light the Eternal Light. Wax candles are perfectly acceptable, however, and most menorahs are lit with candles. Although the menorah may be made of wood, glass or metal, it should be attractive, and the eight Hanukkah candles must be in a straight line. The Menorah is NOT just decorative (like Christmas tree lights), but should be placed in a window and treated respectfully.
The site below gives strict instructions for the order of the blessings and how to say them.
Other observations include making traditional Hanukkah food. The site below also tells the history of various holidays, including Hanukkah.
“Symbols in Hanukkah Foods
Oil is obviously one of the central themes of Hanukkah and this is reflected in the foods enjoyed on the holiday, foods like potato pancakes (latkes) and jelly-filled donuts (sufganiyot)…cheese blintzes are a favorite Hanukkah food. ” Although it’s not a meal, Hanukkah geld (money) (chocolate coins covered with gold foil) are given to the children, sometimes hidden, and often as rewards for good grades, etc. the geld is associated with the famous Dreidel game.
Many families have children make their own Driedels (the second site below, kidsdomain.com, has many Hanukkah activities for children.
For more recipes, try foodnetwork.com. and the link below, judaism.about.com. There are dozens of recipes for latkes alone, which is good, since the plain ones tend to be…well…I never cared for them!
Remember, Hanukkah isn’t a big food holiday, or not until recently. In fact, it isn’t really a huge celebratory deal, like Rosh HaShana, but mostly about the perserverence of Jewish culture and tradition.
One of my favorite modern “products” for Hanukkah, if you have young kids, is the “Rugrats” Hanukkah special, in which the Temple puts on a play about Judah defeating the Syrians, and the little kids imagine themselves in the roles. It teaches them (and many non-Jewish adults!) about the holiday, too!
If you intend to keep celebrating the Jewish holidays/holy days, about.com has info on those, too.
