Colors are one of the most useful and powerful tools for an artist’s expression. Our reaction to hues is almost instantaneous and has a profound impact on the choices we make every day in the different walks of life. Have you ever wondered why artists use different colors and at times quite deviated combinations? Well, colors and human psyche have their own association. As you start to learn about shades, you will get to explore the real facts of Key Colors Symbolism. You will get to know that colors are nothing but a reflection of our Culture and Psychology.
For an artist, some hues such as, Red, White, Green, Blue, Yellow, Brown, and Black, which are key colors, have their distinct symbolism. The Key Colors Symbolism is a representation of some fundamental human feelings. As a standard for example, Red symbolizes passion, sensuality, love, & affection; White indicates peace; Yellow reflects happiness; Green inspires life; Blue indicates tranquility; Brown is bold & deep; and Black symbolizes mystery, grief, and sadness.
However, is that all about Key Colors Symbolism? Definitely not. The deep and the wide world of hues involve many representations for same colors, with the change of geographical locations and the prevailing cultures there.
People from different cultures, respond to different hues in different ways, based on their subconscious and emotional levels. In American culture, Black has long been associated with death, sophistication, and formality, while White is believed to signify life and purity. In the Orient however, White is the traditional color of mourning. Americans generally symbolize trust and stability with the color Blue, while Koreans have this reaction to Pink and other pastel colors.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his book, Theory of Colors (1810), outlined the “Effect of color with reference to moral associations.” He believed that hues not only affect mind, but they also “produce definite, specific states in the living organ.” He makes many assumptions in his book such as, in section 776 he mentions, “A yellow-red cloth disturbs and enrages animals.”
Recognized Color Theorist, Faber Birren, in his book Color Psychology and Color Therapy, lists what he calls “Modern American Color Associations.” For example, he lists the Symbolism of Red as follows:
General appearance: “Brilliant, intense, opaque, dry”
Mental associations: “Hot, fire, head, blood”
Direct associations: “Danger, Christmas, Fourth of July, St. Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, flag”
Objective impressions: “Passionate, exciting, fervid, active”
Subjective impressions: “Intensity, rage, rapacity, fierceness”
As is evident from the above, an informed, and the right use of hues is vital. A wrong usage of colors may send an unintended, different message all together. Therefore, right from painting in an art book to advertising media, relevant Symbolism of Key Colors must be considered in the purview of the culture and the general psyche of the audiences.
My name is Annette Labedzki. I am a Canadian abstract painter.I have been a full time artist for the last 25 years.I was born in St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. A few years later we moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I spent my childhood and early adulthood. I remember the first award I received was in Art class in grade 10. The superintendent of the Winnipeg School Board bought one of my paintings! I was so excited!
I received my BFA at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and spent another year studying philosophy at The University of British Columbia. During this time my husband learned English, drove a taxi, received his BMLS degree (Bachelor of Medical Lab. Sciences) and received his DMD degree (dentist). Another award I received was First Prize at the Pacific Northwest Annual Show at the University of Oregon, U.S.A. It is in their private collection.
I have a web site in which I am able to invite other artists. The address is http://www.labedzki-art.com This is also a wonderful site for art collectors to buy original work at great prices.
