Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas?
What are your opinions on switching from saying Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays.
I go to public school and in our lobby we had a Christmas tree, but we added a menorah and some African artwork to represent Kwanzaa. (sorry, if that is spelled wrong, but it was spell checked)
I think that was an example of a good change from just singling out Christmas.
My best friend is Jewish, but she also celebrates Christmas (puts up a tree, stockings, etc) and she says that she isn’t offended if someone says “Merry Christmas” to her, but in public places where people hang those holiday-time banners, they should say, “Happy Holidays” instead of just saying “Merry Christmas”
I agree with that, that it shouldn’t be made a huge deal if someone says merry christmas to you, even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, but we should make adjustments with decorations in public places.
Thoughts????
If I know someone celebrates Christmas I say “Merry Christmas.”
If I know they celebrate Hannukah I say “Happy Hannukah”
If I know they celebrate Solstice I’ll say “Blessed Solstice.”
If I don’t know them, I just say, “Happy Holidays.” I don’t know how that can offend anyone.
True Story:
I was in Walmart one year and the cashier said “Happy Holidays.”
The guy behind me told her, “No, say ‘Merry Christmas.’”
The problem– I don’t celebrate Christmas; I celebrate the Winter Solstice which falls around the 21st.
So the cashier wished me a “happy holiday” on my actual holiday, which made me feel warm & happy, and some loud-mouth tells her she should wish me a merry his holiday instead? I think not.
I am never, ever offended if someone says Merry Christmas, I don’t get why anyone would be offended by a Happy Holiday
