Will an FM radio purchsed in the U.S. work overseas?

As part of Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, I am sending shoebox care packages to school age children overseas. I found some little FM auto-scanner radios that I though would be a nice surprise but now I am worried it might not work in Africa, Asia or South America. Will it?

FM stations in Africa are not consistently broadcasting on frequencies ending in odd numbers (.1, .7, etc.) as in North America. (I’m not sure about other regions – try a Yahoo! or Google search.) If the radios scan continuously through the VHF band – i.e., don’t skip from 91.5 to 91.7 but instead go 91.5, 91.6, 91.7, etc. – then they should work.

Keep in mind that if the radios are battery-operated, it’s unlikely that replacement batteries will be easy to come by for the recipients.
